Soil formed on gypseous iridescent marl of the Keuper or Trias upper layer in the Murcia zone, in the south-east of Spain, constitutes within the semiarid climate of the region, an ecological means generally suitable for cultivation with irrigation, of citrus, especially orange and lemon trees. The lithological material indicated, mixed with other adjacent parent materials of a different nature, such as fragile limestone or grey Miocene marl, provides also a soil of anthropic character, suitable for citrus cultivation under an irrigation system. The chemical composition and physical character are being studied and analyzed, both of natural soils on Keuper in their different facies, and those originated by deposits of alluvium and erosion, likewise those sedimented in complex mixtures in quaternary coluvial depressions. The presence of oligoelements is also determined in these singular marls, on account of their influence on the complete development of citrus species grown ecological circunstance which are defined by Keuper soil, semiarid climate and no saline irrigation water from the river Segura, which flows on the Mediterranean slope and fertilizes there. |
